How to read these figures

Every figure here comes from a sample, not from counting every site, so it carries a margin: how much it could move if we had happened to sample different pages. A figure measured on a thousand pages has a wide margin; one measured on a hundred thousand has a narrow one. It matters for one thing: two figures that differ by less than the wider of their margins count as tied, even if one is slightly higher. That is why nothing here has a position number.

How to improve this figure on your site

2 · Stable

25% of the score

Your page holds still while it loads.

An agent that works your page the way a person does takes a screenshot and clicks where it saw the button. If an image arrives late or a banner pushes the content down in between, it clicks something else. Lighthouse counts it in its own agentic category, and here a page passes when Lighthouse scores its layout shift as good.

What to do

  1. Give every image, video and iframe its size in the markup, with width and height or an aspect-ratio, so the space is kept before the file arrives.
  2. Reserve the space for whatever arrives late, such as cookie banners, adverts and embedded widgets, with a minimum height the content then fills.
  3. Do not insert content above what is already on screen unless it answers a click.
  4. Load web fonts with font-display: swap and a fallback adjusted with size-adjust, so the text keeps its size when the font arrives.
<img src="/hero.jpg" width="1200" height="630" alt="…">

<style>
  .cookie-banner-slot { min-height: 88px; }
</style>

Usually an afternoon of markup and CSS. The work is finding what moves, and Lighthouse lists it.
